Tanning salons are becoming a very 'cool' place to be going and to be seen.
Tanning has been "en vogue" for the past 80 to 90 years, thanks to Coco Chanel. The French designer started the craze toward bronzed skin when she reportedly picked up a suntan by accident on a cruise, and ever since then the world has been fascinated by people with the bronzed look. Most people throughout history have gotten their suntans by laying out under the broiling sun on vacation.
However, the recent trend toward busier schedules has left sun-seekers with little time to devote to their tans. To fill the gap, tanning salons have become increasingly popular over recent years. Many tanning salons use special lights to reproduce the effects of the sun’s rays, while others use cosmetic products to simulate a perfect tan. Whichever type you choose, tanning-salons provide an economical and fast way to give you that sun-kissed look.
Salons that use ultraviolet (UV) lights to stimulate your skin and produce a tan are by far the most common. Many beauty and hair salons and spas have added tanning to their list of available self-care options, and there are many businesses devoted solely to tanning. All of these salons will use one or possibly both of two types of tanning booths - horizontal or vertical. In a horizontal booth, the tanner lies down to receive the rays, while a vertical booth provides light from all sides while the tanner stands.
Either way, good results will be achieved, especially if the staff of the salon is well trained and nowledgeable.
When you go to one of these salons, the staff should ask your questions to determine your skin type and develop a schedule of treatments based on that schedule. It will usually take several short minutes, ranging from 10 to 15-minute sessions to produce a great tan, but these sessions are generally inexpensive and can fit in with your busy schedule.
Tanning salons use sunless tanning cosmetic products, which are becoming more and more popular as people worry about the effects of UV exposure. Sunless tanning products use the active ingredient dihydroxyacetone (DHA) to color the epidermis. The advantage of sunless tanning is that it gives you a tan while avoiding any UV exposure, thus lessening the risk of certain types of skin cancer.
While you can buy these products and apply them yourself, a tanning-salon will provide a spray booth to give you an even (if not quite real) all-round tan. You also take advantage of staff expertise since most salons are staffed by people who have applied these products to hundreds or even thousands of people, while you have probably only ever applied them to yourself! Self-application, even in the case of spray products, often leads to tan lines and blotching, but these problems can be avoided by visiting a tanning salon. Some multi-use salons have services other than tanning. For example, this salon offers Sonoma body wraps that help you lose weight, relax, and relieve pain. Other services might include anything from massage, to hair and nails. I would stay away from salons that do too many things. Maybe one thing like the salon above that just offers body wraps is probably ok. But once you get spread thin, the quality of the product decreases.
