The Indoor Tanning Association was founded in 1999 and represents the many manufacturers, facilities, and distributors involved in the tanning industry. The ITA works with local and national governments to protect the rights of tanners and the tanning industry, which generated more than $5 billion dollars annually. The ITA prides itself in promoting responsible tanning, skin care and protection, and sunburn prevention. The ITA supports research and education to promote healthy tanning behavior and ensure proper knowledge about tanning, whether by natural or artificial light.

The ITA promotes tanning as a beneficial health practice as well as a cosmetic exercise. The ITA works to support research and publications that spread information about the benefits of both indoor and outdoor tanning such as psychological benefits, disease prevention, and emotional well-being.

The ITA has faced some controversy surrounding video and print ads claiming tanning is good for you. These ads claim tanning does not cause cancer and that it causes melanoma hype. The American Academy of Dermatology and the United States Department of Health and Human Services have issued several statements refuting the claims in these ads. The ITA stands firm in its position and continues to try to spread their mission of healthy tanning.

I did not know they had an Association for people who tan. What a great idea!
