When you go tanning, it’s important to take into consideration all the possible harms and side effects. If you take any medications, it is vital to discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist. Many medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, as well as herbal and homeopathic medications can create something called photosensitivity in a person. Everything from cosmetics to skin creams and blood pressure medications to natural vitamins can potentially cause a drug-induced photosensitive reaction. Photosensitivity cause by medication often appears as an intense sunburn.
Photosensitivity is more common in people with fair skin; red, blonde, or light brown hair; and green or blue eyes. If you sunburn more easily than you tan, or you have a history of sever sunburns, this increases your risk of photosensitivity. If you have naturally sensitive skin or have a history of allergies, you are more likely to be photosensitive.
Not all people who take reported photosensitizing medications will have a photosensitive reaction to the reported medications. If you do experience photosensitivity, it doesn’t mean you will always experience it. Also, each person can experience a different degree of photosensitivity. It is best to discuss each medication, cosmetic, supplement, etc. with your pharmacist or doctor. He/she will be able to discuss the risks with you and determine your likelihood of photosensitivity.
